Managing Runtime Configurations and Environment Variables

Runtime configurations and environment variables are essential for managing application settings that need to be dynamically adjustable. They allow applications to adapt to different environments (development, staging, production) without modifying source code.

Benefits of Using Environment Variables

Security: Keeps sensitive information like API keys and database credentials out of source code.

Flexibility: Enables easy switching between different environments.

Scalability: Allows seamless configuration updates without code changes.

Maintainability: Reduces hardcoded values, making applications easier to manage.

To manage the environment variables We can use Infisical, a secret management tool, to securely store and manage environment variables.

Setting Up Infisical in Nuxt 3

Use Node Version 18

  1. Global Installation

To install the Infisical CLI globally on your system, run:

npm install -g @infisical/cli

To set up the Infisical CLI with your account:

run this in your project terminal

infisical login

This command will prompt you to log in to your Infisical account. If you don’t have an account, you will need to create one first. Once logged in, Infisical will generate the necessary credentials to securely access your environment secrets.

infisical init

This command will create a .infisical.json configuration file in your project. This file contains project-specific settings that allow Infisical to fetch and manage your environment secrets seamlessly.

  1. Start the Development Server Finally, run the following command to start your Nuxt 3 development server:
npm run dev
